The End of Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2

Here I am again with another piece on Fortnite! I figure the season updates and battle pass stuff is getting a bit dull (although we are in a new season now….). What isn’t dull, however. That is how Chapter 3 Season 2 ended out.

After much speculation, and a whole lot of in-game story leading up to it. It was time for war!

Epic games have set a gold standard for in-game events that take place live and allow you and your squad to participate. They’re one-off and you have to be there at the right time, so they always feel like a rare treat.

Rarity aside, the quality of these end-of-season events has often been pretty good. I’d have to say that the end of this season was probably the best that I’ve been a part of.

Season 2 has been one of war, the clash between the seven and the IO (Imagined Order) forces. Something I’m barely keeping up with narratively if I’m honest. But there are two warring factions, trying to take control and we’re on the side of the seven. I know The Rock is one of them, and the others all have names like “The Origin”, “The Imagined” and “The Foundation”.

It’s been nice to be a casual observer of the ramp-up to the event, and then I had the great fortune to get signed in on Saturday night with my brothers and nephew and experience it together.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 - Shooting

What went down?

When you sign into the event, you and your squad are transported to an Ice Moon which is where the giant bear mecha is being repaired (the mech was last seen in a previous end-of-season event).

You’re in the base, you have a table showing the map of the Fortnite Battle Royale Island and 4 pods. Climb into a pod and you’re playing a little shooter, breaking-up asteroids whilst the time counts down until the start of the event.

Side note: the lighting in here looked really good!

Then, the timer hits 90 seconds, and you’re all standing taking orders at the table with holograms of the relevant characters talking. This is it, we’re going to war and ending the tyranny of the IO….

We all get into the pods, take control of the weapons we’d been using in the asteroid shooter, and now we’re in the mech. This is how you do an end-of-season event!

First, we’re flying through space to the island. Shooting asteroids and obstructions as a squad to help clear the way. Now we’ve landed and we’re faced with battalions of tanks and we’re shooting forcefields over enemy encampments, all whilst working towards “The Collider” (a structure that popped up towards the end of the season, swarming with soldiers of the imagined order).

As we get close, we got hammered by the zeppelin-style airships, taking heavy damage. Thankfully the classic banana-dude “Peely” comes in clutch and delivers a tanker of Slurp Juice for us to use and generate health and shield.

Yes, this is crazy and over the top. But what fun!

Eventually, we make it to The Collider, take down the shield and pull out a big light blade, slashing through all the airships. Just as we got to strike The Collider with the blade, BOOM! we’re hit and the mech is destroyed, falling down underground.

Season 2 - Mecha

Season-ending

We think it’s all over, but we’re ejected and meet the good old agent Jones (classic default-skin) from the first variation of the Battle Royale. Lots of running and gunning, trying to get to the boss “Doctor Slone”, trying to stop her from taking control of Zero Point (not really sure what that means, but that’s what it said…..).

She’s in a tank, and we have assault rifles…….so it’s run and gun time!

Season events need some dialogue, and a good villain needs a good monologue, right? Our enemy Doctor Slone starts mouthing off a bit, and we’re good to go. Then Agent Jones makes a speech to keep her distracted. And here we go, in-comes the mech’s hand, and she gets crushed.

The whole squad is lifted up to shoot at some crystal detonators, and The Collier collapses.

Now we see “Geno” the real leader of the Imagined Order. So as things collapse the Zero Point focuses on Geno, and we are sent travelling to their reality.

I don’t know exactly what I’ve just written there. The season has been full of all of these people, war, clashing across the map and this was the culmination.

What I do know is that it was really slick, it was fun, it looked great and all of us had a great time seeing the season out.

Now we’ve started a new season which is focused on summer fun and “Vibin’” which is a much more relaxed and colourful take on the island. Season 2 was a blast with some great innovations for the game. It ended with a bang, and now we’re all just chillin’ in season 3. Let’s see where that takes us.
