The announcement came via Square Enix’s Japanese X account, marking March 11 as the 30th anniversary of the legendary RPG. Chrono Trigger was a collaboration between Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy), Yuji Horii (Dragon Quest), and Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball). The company promises this year’s projects will go beyond the game itself as a thank-you to fans.

Despite its status as one of the best JRPGs ever, the game has never received a full remake. The Nintendo DS version, which added new content, remains the most definitive edition, and the Steam release—though initially rough—has been improved over time. With the success of the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake, many hope Square Enix will give Chrono Trigger the same treatment.

How to play Chrono Trigger on modern platforms
Currently, the only official way to play Chrono Trigger on modern platforms is via Steam. If Square Enix is serious about celebrating its legacy, now might be the perfect time to bring the game to a new generation.
