Final Fantasy VII Rebirth mod makes environments look stunning with 2x upscaling

If you thought Final Fantasy VII Rebirth already looked great, modders are here to push things even further. A new mod called Natural Fantasy improves the game’s environmental textures through 2x upscaling, covering a massive 1300 textures. That means sharper trees, cliffs, rocks, grass, flowers—you name it. The difference is clear in comparison images, making the world feel even more immersive.

Of course, there’s a trade-off. Depending on your GPU, the mod’s creator reports a 5% to 20% performance hit. If you’re thinking of using it, they recommend an 8GB+ VRAM graphics card and an NVMe SSD. Even then, texture streaming issues might cause some hiccups, but they’ve provided Engine.ini tweaks to help:

r.Streaming.PoolSize=20000 (Adjust to 80% Your VRAM)
r.Streaming.LimitPoolSizeToVRAM=0
r.Streaming.UseFixedPoolSize=0
r.Streaming.PrioritizeMeshLODRetention=1
r.Streaming.SkeletalMeshResidentLODBias=-1
r.Streaming.StaticMeshResidentLODBias=-1
r.Streaming.TextureResidentLODBias=-1
r.Streaming.UseAllMips=1
r.Streaming.UseMaterialData=1
r.Streaming.MaxTempMemoryAllowed=10000
r.Streaming.PoolSizeForMeshes=5000

The state of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PC version

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth only just launched on PC, and early Steam reviews sit at “Mostly Positive” (75%). The game benefits from improved character models and lighting over the PlayStation 5 version, but it’s missing some common PC-specific features.

It supports NVIDIA DLSS and DLAA, but there’s no native AMD FSR or Intel XeSS. On top of that, frame generation isn’t available, and the default frame rate cap is set to 120 FPS—though, as always, modders have solutions.

For tweaks, there’s Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Fix, which lets you adjust the field of view (FoV), disable vignette, and tweak subtitle sizes. Then there’s FFVIIHook, which unlocks INI editing and the dev console, giving players even greater control over settings.
