Atari’s 1976 Breakout returns with a new side-scrolling version

Atari is bringing back one of its oldest and most famous games—Breakout. The classic brick-smashing game from 1976 is getting a fresh new look with exciting changes. The new version, called Breakout Beyond, adds bright neon effects, power-ups, and a side-scrolling layout. It also supports a two-player local co-op, so you can play with a friend.

In the original Breakout, players controlled a paddle at the bottom of the screen, bouncing a ball to break bricks above. The goal was to clear all the bricks. However, Breakout Beyond changes things up in several ways. Instead of staying on one screen, the game moves from left to right, adding a new challenge. The ball now looks like a bright comet with a glowing tail, and the visuals are much flashier than before. There is more than just one ball in play, making the game more chaotic and fun.

Players can collect special power-ups, including bombs that explode and clear nearby bricks, force fields that prevent the ball from falling, and laser cannons that shoot through bricks, similar to Space Invaders. The game also includes a combo system, where breaking many bricks in a row rewards players with cool visual and sound effects. A focus mode lets players slow down time to help control the ball better, but this lowers their score.

Breakout Beyond availability

Breakout Beyond features 72 levels for players to enjoy. It will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and Atari’s VCS console. Atari has not shared the price yet, but the game will be released later this year. Fans of classic arcade games and newcomers alike can look forward to this exciting reboot.
