Indie developer Albatross Interactive has announced Terminal War, a self-funded 4v4 multiplayer shooter built in direct response to Naughty Dog’s cancellation of The Last of Us Factions 2.

The studio made no effort to soften the inspiration, stating plainly on X: “They cancelled The Last of Us Factions 2. So we’re building it our version. We’re indie & entirely self-funded. 4v4. Limited ammo. Brutal executions.”

The post has since surpassed half a million views, accompanied by an unofficial gameplay teaser that draws heavily from the original Factions formula – gritty, resource-scarce combat with an emphasis on brutal melee encounters. Terminal War retains the 4v4 structure that defined the original mode, where survival depended as much on managing supplies as on outgunning opponents.

For context, The Last of Us Factions shipped as part of Part I and offered a distinct multiplayer experience built around an 84-match community survival arc, mechanics that earned it a dedicated following despite never receiving the same mainstream attention as the campaign. Naughty Dog officially cancelled its planned standalone follow-up, leaving that fanbase without a clear successor.

Terminal War is heading to Steam Early Access, with no confirmed release date announced at the time of writing. Whether an indie studio can fill a gap left by one of Sony’s largest developers remains to be seen, but the early response suggests appetite for the attempt is there.
