The Sovietborgs are coming – and they’re here to pacify the West.

Spanish devs Retro Sumus have officially announced that their latest retro-inspired shooter Sovietborgs will launch on IndieGoGo on June 25, 2025, with plans to release the game on classic platforms including the Mega Drive/Genesis, Dreamcast, Neo Geo, and MS-DOS.

Sovietborgs teaser trailer

Set in an alternate post-Cold War future where the Soviet People reign supreme, Sovietborgs throws players into the metal boots of a cybernetic Soviet squad. Their mission? Wipe out the monstrous horrors and rogue factions roaming the land — all while navigating a tongue-in-cheek world that riffs on The Terminator, Universal Soldier, and other ’80s action greats.

The action unfolds from a top-down perspective, drawing inspiration from the likes of The Chaos Engine and Gauntlet. Retro fans will instantly recognise the pre-rendered graphics style — a visual technique popularised by classics like Donkey Kong Country and Vectorman. But it’s not just the art style that’s going full retro: expect shmup-style bonus levels, enormous mutant boss fights, and a punchy synth-driven soundtrack that wouldn’t feel out of place in Red Alert or Urban Strike.

Retro Sumus are no strangers to the scene. Their previous game Xenocider brought the Dreamcast its first new 3D shooter in over 15 years. The team includes veterans of titles like Pier Solar, Ghost Blade, and official Dreamcast ports of Fade to Black and Flashback. With musicians like Juanjo Martín (of Morat) and Sebastián Abreu (Eyra the Crow Maiden, Legend of the Four Winds) on board, the Sovietborgs soundtrack is shaping up to be as brutal as its battles.

The upcoming crowdfunding campaign aims to finalise development across platforms and deliver a physical release for each system. Given Retro Sumus’ track record — and the sheer chaos Sovietborgs promises, this is definitely one to watch if you’re into pixel-pounding, gun-blazing retro carnage.

Stay tuned for the official trailer and full campaign reveal on June 25
