As Via, the protagonist, your job is to guide and care for these creatures, learning how they move, how to protect them, and how to make the most of their abilities.

At its heart, Herdling is about movement—guiding the Calicorns through treacherous paths, avoiding dangers, and making the most of open spaces where they can charge forward in a powerful stampede. This stampede isn’t just for speed; it helps navigate tricky terrain, like steep slopes and thick undergrowth. You’ll also find quiet moments to rest, care for your Calicorns, and customise them with ornaments you collect along the way.
The herd itself is key in Herdling. Too many creatures and they’d lose individuality, too few and it wouldn’t feel like a real herd. Each Calicorn is unique, with different fur patterns, horn shapes, and personalities. You can even name them, making them truly your own. As the game progresses, your bond with them will grow, and by the end, you’ll have a mighty, personalised herd filled with shared memories.
According to Okomotive, getting the herd movement just right was their biggest challenge. They didn’t want it to feel like an escort mission or an obstacle course but rather a natural, intuitive journey. Flowers scattered throughout the world provide special abilities, letting Calicorns interact with the environment or gain the power to charge forward at the perfect moment.
Now that development is wrapping up, the team is excited for players to experience the adventure themselves. They’ve spent years perfecting the flow, making sure every run through the mountains feels exhilarating.
