We’re currently in the midst of what looks likely to become a pandemic with the spread of the Coronavirus. We’ve seen hotels shutdown, cruises lock up passengers, and even eSports events cancelled. And it doesn’t look likely to stop with the European Game Showcase at GDC 2020 now cancelled as well.

The announcement and explanation for the action taken were sent round by the European Game Showcase team earlier today. You can read the announcement below:

On Friday, the GDC organization announced that they will postpone the event to later this summer. This also meant that we had to evaluate our plans for the European Game Showcase at GDC.

Over the weekend we were in contact with the developers who are part of the European Game Showcase. We learned that the majority has cancelled their trip. Only a handful of them will be in San Francisco to showcase their game.

Since the European Game Showcase is a carefully curated event, we don’t have enough time to find enough developers who meet the criteria and who are in San Francisco on March 17. Therefore we feel that we can’t guarantee the quality or critical mass that we strive for. That means that we had to make the difficult decision to cancel the European Game Showcase at GDC 2020.

We are very sorry that we can’t make the event happen, but we hope that you understand this is completely out of our hands. If you had already registered via Eventbrite: we will cancel your tickets, to avoid any reminders.

Best regards,
Your EGS Team: Dajana Dimovska, Eva Gaspar, Tobias Kopka and Alessandra van Otterlo

Hopefully, we won’t be seeing many more of these types of cancellations. But as it is in the name of public safety, you can understand why steps like this must be taken. If more updates are released, you can be sure we’ll bring them to you.
