EA Sports has officially stepped away from developing its long-teased college basketball game after schools opted to side with 2K Sports instead.

The news first surfaced via Matt Brown of Extra Points, who revealed a memo from Sean O’Brien, EA Sports’ Vice President of Commercial Partnerships and Licensing. In it, O’Brien confirmed that EA would be rescinding its proposal following several schools’ decision to move forward with 2K’s competing offer.

EA Sports loses ground to 2K

EA had announced the return of college basketball on June 30, with plans to include every Division 1 men’s and women’s programme in a standalone title. But 2K’s pitch gained traction, evolving from a DLC add-on for NBA 2K into its own game featuring roughly 100 teams.

According to reports, EA’s push for exclusivity in basketball raised concerns, especially given the company hasn’t produced a basketball title since 2018. That hesitation proved enough for schools to lean toward 2K, leaving EA with no path forward.

While EA has yet to release a public statement, the move marks a major setback for fans hoping to see a full-scale college basketball game under the EA Sports banner.
