BioWare’s new game, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, is off to a great start. It’s breaking records on Steam, with over 77,400 players logged in at once. Despite this success, BioWare has no current plans to add story DLCs to the game. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, John Epler, the game’s Creative Director, explained that BioWare’s team is now focused on creating the next Mass Effect game instead.
BioWare, known for creating epic story-driven games, has become a smaller team in recent years. Due to this, they’ve chosen to concentrate all efforts on the new Mass Effect, which Executive Producer Mike Gamble confirmed will feature realistic graphics and a serious tone. As for why Dragon Age: The Veilguard won’t receive additional story content, Creative Director John Epler explained that the game’s story wraps up well, unlike Dragon Age: Inquisition, which required extra DLCs to fully conclude its storyline. However, if Veilguard surpasses EA’s sales expectations, BioWare may consider revisiting their plans for additional content.

Lessons Learned from Past Games
During the interview, Epler talked about how BioWare has learned from their earlier games. Mass Effect Andromeda, which was released in 2017, had issues at launch, including technical glitches and a not-so-interesting open world. These problems made BioWare rethink their design choices.
“We did have a version of Dragon Age 4 that was more open-world but we ran into the same problem” Epler shared.
Anthem, another past game, tried to focus on multiplayer gameplay. However, fans were disappointed, as they’d expected BioWare to stick with the single-player storytelling style they love.
Epler explained: “We’re a studio built to make single-player RPGs, multiplayer became an obstacle in doing just that.”
BioWare’s Future: Will Multiplayer Return?
Even though Anthem didn’t go well, Epler didn’t fully rule out the idea of a multiplayer game in BioWare’s future. He noted that games like Final Fantasy XIV have shown that good storytelling is possible in a multiplayer setting, though it can be challenging.
For now, fans of Dragon Age will have to enjoy The Veilguard as it is, with no plans for extra content. And those looking forward to the next Mass Effect can rest assured that BioWare is giving it their full attention.
