Battlefield 6 beta smashes Call of Duty’s all-time Steam record as EA fights cheaters

Battlefield 6 has just pulled off a huge win. The open beta has drawn in more than 500,000 peak players on Steam, beating Call of Duty’s all-time record of 491,670. That CoD peak came during the launch of MW2 (2022) and the Warzone 2.0, so this is no small feat.

The beta’s free-to-play access no doubt helped, making it easy for anyone to jump in. The real test will come at launch, when the full game has a price tag. Many CoD players also use Battle.net, Game Pass, or consoles, so the Steam numbers don’t tell the full story. Still, interest is sky-high, with player counts climbing since open access began.

EA also revealed that its Javelin anti-cheat has blocked 330,000 cheating attempts in just two days of early access. Players have submitted over 100,000 reports of possible cheaters, which the SPEAR team is using to fine-tune detection. Secure Boot, one of their tools, isn’t a cure-all but adds another barrier.

Some cheaters are bypassing protections using external hardware that runs the cheats away from the gaming PC – a more complex method beyond the average player’s reach. EA is aware, but stopping these “special” cheats is not an easy task.

Early queues were long, but stability improved on day two. If performance holds, Battlefield 6 could be set for a massive launch.
