The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has now pulled in over 9 million players, Bethesda Game Studios announced this week. The update came with a short message and an image of the adoring fan, now sporting a number nine haircut to mark the occasion.

Bethesda’s post thanked players for diving back into Cyrodiil, whether that meant saving Kvatch, leading the Mages Guild, or sneaking through the shadows as the Gray Fox.

The remaster took off quickly, passing 4 million players in just two days, helped by Game Pass availability on Xbox and PC. Analyst firm Newzoo said the game showed “outstanding revenue performance”, and Circana confirmed it was April’s best-selling game in the US across all platforms.

Despite that, Virtuos, the studio behind the remaster, recently cut nearly 280 jobs across its European and Asian teams. It’s unclear how this will affect ongoing support. Performance issues, especially stuttering in the open world, are still present. Update 1.2 made improvements, but problems remain.

The game is successful, but it’s not fully polished. Fixing what’s left could cement Oblivion Remastered as the best way to play the classic RPG.
