Microsoft is introducing a big update for Xbox consoles, bringing support for larger external storage devices. According to the latest release notes from the Xbox Insider program, this feature is currently available to members in the Alpha Skip-Ahead Ring. These early users can test the update before it is released to the public.
The update allows Xbox consoles to support external USB hard drives larger than 16 TB. This is great news for gamers who like to keep many games installed and ready to play. When larger drives are formatted, the system will divide the storage into multiple partitions. These partitions will show up as separate devices in the storage list, making it easier to use all the available space.

At the moment, Xbox-licensed storage devices, like the WD_BLACK D10 by Western Digital, have a maximum capacity of 12 TB. While these are great for regular gamers, people who need extra space may want to look at non-branded devices. Some hard drives with capacities ranging from 18 TB to 28 TB are available, but they come with high price tags.
There are some things to keep in mind about this new feature. If you already have a drive larger than 16 TB that has been formatted, it will not automatically work with the new system. You will need to reformat the drive to take full advantage of the update. Additionally, the Insider notes mention a known issue with formatting these larger drives, and Microsoft is working on fixing it.

The release notes did not mention the new maximum limit for external storage devices, so it remains unclear how large a drive the Xbox will support in the future.
This update is an exciting step for Xbox users who need more storage space for their games and apps. While the feature is still in testing, it is expected to roll out to everyone soon.
