War Child UK’s annual Day of the Girl fundraiser has now come to a successful close, having played host to an epic female-focused Steam Sale, an insightful and lively industry panel and an array of live streams loaded with girl-power.
Day of the Girl celebrates female protagonists in games & female representation in the gaming industry, and is held annually around International Day of the Girl – a UN ratified day that focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights.
War Child partnered with its friends across the industry to host the Day of the Girl Steam sale, which featured games from Inkle, Fishing Cactus, PlugIn Digital, Sam Barlow, Blindflug, Fullbright, Homebear Studio, Houndpicked Games, Pixel Hunt Games, Elden Pixels, Ageless and Team 17.
The UK charity also hosted the virtual Game of the Girl panel, which featured an all-female panel of experts – Ellie Gibson (Scummy Mummies), Anita Wong (Indigo Pearl) Izzy Jagan (Square Enix), Jade King (Trusted Reviews), Imogen Mellor (GamingBible) – discussing the many different ways they are celebrated, challenged and perceived within the gaming industry.
The panel can be rewatched in full via War Child UK’s official YouTube channel and below:
A number of DotG livestreams also took place over the last week, which saw an array of female content creators – Leoz, Dawnwhisper, HerNameIsMelula, KattStrike, Mousie, Ravs, Batkitto, ImoMellor and Lomadia – each hosting their own Day of the Girl fundraising streams that resulted in an amazing £9,330 being raised.
War Child UK provides protection, education, and livelihood opportunities for children and communities affected by war, including supporting girls on the issues that most affect them such as early marriage, girls’ education, and girls’ rights.
