In a recent announcement, Ubisoft revealed that XDefiant, their multiplayer shooter, will officially close down on 3 June 2025. The decision comes after low player numbers and minimal in-game spending made it unsustainable to keep the game running.
Why is XDefiant shutting down?
The news was shared during an internal all-hands meeting at Ubisoft. Reports suggest that XDefiant struggled to attract enough players, and those who did play were not spending much on the game. This issue has been a consistent theme in Ubisoft’s financial reports, highlighting the challenge of sustaining underperforming games.
Additionally, the company has been facing broader troubles, including a disappointing launch for Star Wars Outlaws and uncertainties around the delayed Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
What happens now?
Season 3 of XDefiant will be the last major update for the game. After that, only a small team will manage the game until it officially shuts down next June. Starting today:
- New downloads and player registrations are no longer available.
- Only players who already had the game downloaded or registered can continue playing.
Executive Producer Mark Rubin confirmed that players who purchased the Ultimate Founder’s Pack will be refunded. Refunds will also be given to anyone who made in-game purchases in the last 30 days, with refunds being processed automatically within eight weeks.
A bittersweet farewell for players and the community
Fans of XDefiant have shared mixed feelings about the closure. While many are saddened to see the game end, others feel it was expected given its struggles. Ubisoft’s decision to refund purchases, especially for those who bought the Ultimate Founder’s Pack or made recent transactions, has been well-received as a thoughtful gesture.
The servers will remain active until 3 June 2025, allowing dedicated players to enjoy the game for a little longer. Ubisoft encourages players to visit the official XDefiant website for full details on the shutdown process and refund policies.
