The Prisoning: Fletcher’s Quest, the latest indie madness from Swedish studio Elden Pixels (Alwa’s Legacy, A Void Hope), has officially dropped its playable demo as part of Steam Next Fest—and it’s as brilliantly broken as the developer protagonist you’ll be playing.
The game follows Fletcher Howie Jr., a game developer who’s hit rock bottom. After a post-crunch therapy session takes a very surreal turn, Fletcher is trapped inside his own subconscious, left to navigate a 2D metroidvania world packed with trauma, stress, and self-aware satire.
Armed with a double jump, an extra bullet, and just enough mental stability, players will blast inner demons, uncover pixelated secrets, and quite literally jump the shark in a world that’s as visually nostalgic as it is emotionally chaotic.
To celebrate the Steam demo launch, Elden Pixels has released a new gameplay trailer, showcasing just a glimpse of the weird, witty, and wonderfully meta experience that lies ahead.
“The humour hits, the movement’s tight, and the art is doing overtime,” says one early demo player. Another adds, “I booted it up for ‘just a few minutes’ and now it’s 3:17 a.m. and I’m emotionally attached to a game that keeps insulting me.”
