Obsidian Entertainment’s much-awaited sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds 2 is officially launching on October 29, 2025. The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, with day-one access on Game Pass.

The standard edition is priced at $79.99 (~£63), while the Premium Edition will cost $99.99 (~£78). Players who pre-order will receive the Commander Zane Pack, which includes themed armour, weapons, and a drone companion.

Arcadia: a new frontier full of bad decisions

The Outer Worlds 2 takes players away from Halcyon and into Arcadia, a chaotic, lawless colony suffering from dimensional rifts, faction warfare, and corporate madness. As an agent of the Earth Directorate, you’re dropped into the middle of it all with a simple mission: fix what’s broken. Or make it worse. Your call.

Every choice in The Outer Worlds 2 carries weight. Dialogue, alliances, and even your flaws are shaped by how you play. For example, stealing too often might trigger a new trait, Kleptomaniac, which boosts loot sales but makes your character accidentally steal items during normal interactions. It’s unpredictable, and that’s the point.

Science weapons return with absurd flair. The Shrink Ray makes a comeback, only this time you can step on enemies once they’re tiny. And yes, there’s a wearable suit of armour named Gary. He was alive once. Now he’s a shield.

Choose a side or don’t

Three major factions are fighting for control of Arcadia in The Outer Worlds 2, and each represents a wildly different view of humanity’s future:

  • The Protectorate – A powerful military group offering security in exchange for blind obedience. Peace through control.
  • Auntie’s Choice – A corporate giant created from the merger of Spacer’s Choice and Auntie Cleo’s. Their freedom comes wrapped in branding and jingles.
  • The Order of the Ascendant – A cult of former scientists who now follow mathematical prophecies and rituals. Their goal? Perfection through equations.

Each faction controls different regions, has its own followers, propaganda, and radio broadcasts. As the story unfolds, towns can change hands, news reports shift depending on your actions, and the world evolves around your decisions.

A reactive world with real consequences

In The Outer Worlds 2, Arcadia is more alive than anything Obsidian has built before. Thanks to a dynamic radio system, your choices are broadcast across the colony. One station might praise you as a saviour, while another calls for your head. All of them, however, want you to try their latest health tonic.

Your actions don’t just affect strangers; you’ll also shape the fate of your companions. There are six in total, and they’re not just background characters. They argue, push back, and make their demands. You could be forced to choose between their loyalty and your plans.

Here’s the full crew:

  • Niles – A fellow Earth agent struggling with loyalty and doubt.
  • Inez – A corporate experiment turned fighter with a conscience.
  • Aza – A Rift cultist drawn to chaos and mayhem.
  • Marisol – A sharp-edged assassin following the Order’s logic.
  • Tristen – A law-bringer from the Protectorate with rigid beliefs.
  • Valerie – A cheerful drone with surprisingly deadly upgrades.

How you treat them and whether they survive is all part of the story. Lose one, and it could change the course of your missions and close off questlines permanently.

Editions, upgrades, and early access

The Outer Worlds 2 comes in two editions:

  • Standard Edition – $79.99 (~£63)
