Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon 1.0 release date confirmed for 23 May

Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is finally getting its full release, and it’s looking like a serious time sink in the best way possible. After two years in Steam Early Access, Questline has confirmed that version 1.0 of this dark open-world RPG will launch on 23 May for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. And it’s packing a whole lot more than just polish.

If you’ve played Tainted Grail: Conquest, the deckbuilding roguelike that put Questline on the map back in 2021, you’ll know the devs have a knack for mixing dark fantasy with strong RPG systems. But The Fall of Avalon is a different beast entirely, first-person (now with third-person too), massive in scale, and firmly rooted in a grim reimagining of Arthurian legend.

What’s coming in Tainted Grail version 1.0?

This isn’t just a bug-fix update or a visual overhaul—it’s a full-fat RPG release. Here’s a breakdown of what players can expect when Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon hits version 1.0:

  • Three large regions to explore: Horns of the South, Cuanacht, and Forlorn Swords
  • 250 fully voiced NPCs, making the world feel alive and personal
  • Over 200 side quests are scattered throughout Avalon
  • More than 60 enemy types, each with their own attack patterns and lore
  • 70+ handcrafted dungeons packed with secrets, puzzles, and loot
  • Branching main questline with multiple endings that reflect your choices

The devs are estimating anywhere between 50 to 70 hours of gameplay, and that’s without accounting for replaying to see different outcomes.

And for those who couldn’t deal with the first-person view, whether due to preference or motion sickness, Questline is finally introducing a third-person camera. It’s not perfect yet, and they’ve openly said it’s more of a stepping stone for accessibility than a polished feature, but it’s a welcome addition for many players.

Of course, there’s also a bunch of new Achievements being added for those who want to document their entire journey through Avalon.

A dark fantasy twist on Arthurian legend

What makes The Fall of Avalon stand out is its setting. This isn’t your typical “sword in the stone” fare. Instead, it’s a bleak, mature look at a kingdom unravelled after 600 years of Camelot’s reign. You’re not just fighting monsters, you’re deciding what the world looks like after the age of heroes has passed. Your choices shape the fate of Avalon and the legacy of King Arthur.

And the devs are proud of how far the Fall of Avalon has come. In a post on Steam, they joked about releasing “golden horse armour DLC” in honour of Oblivion Remastered, but also got a bit emotional about it:

“It is so good to see Oblivion coming back with such a style! It is one of the games that shaped us when we were kids/teens… but for now… well, we have a game to finish first!”

That love for the genre shows. They even admitted that if you told them two years ago how big Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon would get, they’d have laughed. Now, they’re calling version 1.0 “crazy” in terms of content, though the full patch notes are still under wraps.

If you’re into open-world RPGs that do more than just checkbox questing, Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon is one to keep an eye on. The full release drops on 23 May for PC and consoles, and it’s shaping up to be one of those games that sticks with you long after the credits roll.
