Paramount and Activision are finally moving forward with a Call of Duty film, but it turns out the project nearly had one of the biggest names in Hollywood behind the camera – Steven Spielberg.
Call of Duty film nearly had Steven Spielberg in charge
According to a report from Puck, Spielberg pitched his own vision for the movie. Backed by his company, Amblin, and Universal’s Jimmy Horowitz, he wanted to bring one of gaming’s biggest franchises to the big screen. Sources even claim he’s a huge gamer himself, with a soft spot for Call of Duty.

But there was a catch. Spielberg reportedly demanded full creative control, final cut, and top-tier pay. For Activision, that was too much power to give away. Instead, the studio chose a pitch from producer David Ellison, which left them with more control over the project.
Nothing official has been confirmed, but the idea of Spielberg directing Call of Duty is one that will sting for fans. Imagine the man who gave us Saving Private Ryan tackling one of gaming’s most iconic war series.
The Call of Duty film is still in early development, with no director or cast confirmed.
