If Sea of Stars left you hungry for more after the credits rolled, Sabotage Studio has something special cooking. The free DLC Throes of the Watchmaker is launching across all platforms on 20 May, and it’s not just a small side quest; it’s a full-on post-game adventure packing over eight hours of new gameplay.
This isn’t just a minor add-on. It’s a meaty expansion built for returning players looking to dive deeper into Sea of Stars’ lore, mechanics, and charming world design. Best of all? It’s completely free.
New classes, new character, new world
Throes of the Watchmaker shifts focus to one of the most fascinating side characters in the original campaign: the Watchmaker, creator of the Clockwork Castle and the in-game mini-game Wheels. Now, players will explore a miniature mechanical world called Horloge, a place threatened by a cursed carnival. Yep—Sabotage is going weird with this one, and it sounds incredible.
Zale and Valere won’t just be visiting new places, they’ll be transforming completely. Zale puts away his sword and becomes a juggler, while Valere swaps her staff for an acrobatic fighting style. This DLC introduces entirely new classes, combos, and skills. And joining the fight is Arty, a new laser-toting mechanised sharpshooter known as the Artificer. If you thought the original combat system was tight, this expansion’s set to remix it in all the right ways.

Designed for New Game+ or post-game play
This isn’t a mid-game side path—it’s a post-game quest designed to be tackled after you finish the main story. That means you’ll already have a grasp on Sun and Moon magic, but in Throes of the Watchmaker, you’ll need to master those powers in a whole new setting. Horloge operates under its own strange rules, so expect puzzles, traps, and surprises that break the usual rhythm.
The devs say the cinematic budget for this DLC matches the main game. So don’t expect filler. Expect rich, story-driven moments and lush hand-drawn visuals, just like before, but with a darker, carnival-tinged twist.

A brand new soundtrack (and Mitsuda is back!)
Composer Eric W. Brown returns to lead the soundtrack for this new chapter, bringing that signature energy fans loved in the base game. Even better, legendary composer Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger) is back as a guest, adding some fresh tracks to the mix. For RPG music lovers, this DLC will be a feast.
Comes after the co-op update, continues momentum
This expansion follows Dawn of the Equinox, the previous free update introducing local co-op, combat tweaks, and polish to the campaign. Throes of the Watchmaker builds on that foundation, giving fans even more reason to jump back in or start fresh in New Game+.
Whether you’re finishing up your first playthrough or itching to revisit the game from the top, Throes of the Watchmaker is shaping up to be the ultimate excuse to return. And with a release date locked in for 20 May, you don’t have long to wait.

Sea of Stars is out now on PS5, PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Mark your calendar, because Throes of the Watchmaker will be one of the standout free DLCs of the year.
