In a thrilling announcement from Tokyo, Japan, Japanese game developer Minnapad has unveiled their latest project with help from Satoru Yamashita, Dhalman, a captivating blend of retro Metroidvania action and shop management. This project, which is set to delight fans of classic Japanese games, is now live on Kickstarter.
A love letter to retro gaming
Featuring characters designed by the legendary former Capcom artist Satoru Yamashita, known for his work on Street Fighter 2, Final Fight, and Ghosts ‘n Goblins, Dhalman promises to be a visual and nostalgic feast. The game centres around a young boy named Dhalman, who dreams of transforming his family’s curry shop into the best in the world.
Epic adventures and fierce battles
Players will join Dhalman on his quest to gather rare spices from across the world by battling numerous bosses. The game features a diverse roster of opponents, including the four-armed elephantine Ganesha, Chinese martial artist Mei-Ling, psychic shadow cadet Emilio, electric wild child Little Spark, and the wise Master Jiro. Besides his spice-gathering adventures, Dhalman can also engage in street fighting tournaments to earn extra money for his family’s business.
A team of Capcom veterans
Dhalman is a labour of love crafted by some of Capcom’s greatest artists. Satoru Yamashita brings his iconic style to the game’s character design, ensuring a nostalgic yet fresh visual experience. Additionally, acclaimed Mega Man composer Akari Kaida is on board to create an original soundtrack, promising to deliver the same classic feel that fans of retro games adore.
Join the journey on Kickstarter
The Dhalman Kickstarter campaign is now live, offering exclusive backer rewards and the opportunity to help bring this dream project to life. Tatsuya Nishioka, CEO of Minnapad, expressed his excitement about the project:
“We saw how excited people got for other Kickstarters for spiritual successors to 90s classics, like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Eiyuden, so we wanted to create our own throwback to Capcom’s illustrious back catalogue. Satoru Yamashita was interested in revisiting this kind of colourful, family-friendly gaming that inspired us so much growing up. We also got Mega Man composer Akari Kaida to work on the soundtrack, ensuring that Dhalman will feel like a long-lost classic!”
Inspired by travel and culture
Satoru Yamashita shared his inspiration for the game: “Dhalman came from my travel experiences and watching travel videos on YouTube. I’m currently keen on India, with its friendly people, cows walking on the streets, loud noises, ancient ruins, and vibrant dances. I thought it would be great to capture the intense aspects of India in visuals.”
