Resident Evil Requiem will put players face-to-face with a very different Leon Kennedy. The game’s ninth mainline entry explores how years of fighting the undead have hardened him.

Capcom director Koshi Nakanishi told DenNicoFamiGamer that this older Leon now carries a “ruthless anger.” He’s more cynical and cold, shaped by his past battles. Nakanishi says the team wanted to ask, “What type of person would Leon grow into? What would he be thinking?”

Resident Evil Requiem shows Leon’s darker side with an ax

A big sign of this change is Leon’s weapon choice. In the game, he swings an ax. Nakanishi says it’s meant to make players pause. “You might start thinking, ‘What’s wrong with you, Leon?’ while playing,” he explained. The ax reflects his aggression and how different he has become over two decades.

The upcoming game aims to make players question Leon’s mindset and the darker path he’s taken.

Resident Evil Requiem launches on February 27 for PlayStation 5, PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Xbox.
