Ubisoft has officially cancelled Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, bringing an end to a project that has faced years of trouble behind the scenes.

The move comes as Ubisoft confirmed a major company-wide restructuring. In total, five games have been cancelled, including three unannounced new IPs and a mobile title. The publisher said these projects did not meet its new quality standards or portfolio priorities.

According to Ubisoft, the decision was made at a group level as it becomes more selective about what it invests in going forward.

Prince of Persia caught in Ubisoft’s wider shake-up

As part of the restructuring, Ubisoft is forming five new “creative houses”. The first, Vantage Studios, will oversee major franchises such as Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six. The remaining studios will manage brands like The Division, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, and Rayman.

The cancellation is surprising, given recent signs that the remake was close to release.

It was first announced in 2020, and the remake suffered repeated delays before being rebooted at Ubisoft Montreal. The team rebuilt the game with updated visuals, new animations, and redesigned combat and parkour.

In a statement, the developers said the project had potential but could not reach the quality fans deserved without further time and investment. Ubisoft added that Prince of Persia remains important and the franchise is not being abandoned.
