If you’ve ever wanted a cosy game to actually teach you something you can use in the real world, Out and About might just be your next obsession. Scottish-German indie studio Yaldi Games has launched Out and About into early access on PC via Steam, offering a foraging-focused life sim that blends relaxation with real-life plant knowledge.

Set in the sleepy coastal town of Portobello after a devastating storm, you’ll step into the role of a returning local who’s determined to help rebuild the community. The catch? You’ll be doing it by learning about the wild landscape around you, and the plants, fungi, and resources it offers.

Learn while you play

Early access already includes 50+ real plants and fungi to identify, all modelled and described in a way that transfers directly into real-world recognition. The full release will feature over 100.

From there, you can use your harvests to:

  • Cook 90+ recipes (150+ planned for full release), with real step-by-step instructions you could follow at home.
  • Craft herbal remedies that tap into traditional knowledge.
  • Learn about sustainable foraging, taking only what you need so nature can thrive.

A community worth coming back to

Outside of foraging, you can befriend the locals, customise your character with outfits and hairstyles, and explore a world that shifts from dense forests to wetlands and beaches. Your journey is as much about restoring Portobello as it is about reconnecting with the natural world.

After a Kickstarter campaign that smashed its funding goal by 380%, Yaldi Games has built Out and About to be more than just another life sim, it’s a digital hobby you can take into the real outdoors.
