It’s official—MultiVersus is shutting down. After months of speculation and a dwindling player base, the team behind the game has confirmed that the platform fighter will be going offline at the end of season 5. The news, posted on X, didn’t come as a shock to many, but that didn’t make it any less disappointing for fans.
The game’s journey has been rocky, with players praising the open Beta but feeling that the full release didn’t live up to expectations. While new characters were added over time, performance issues, laggy menus, and a general lack of support from the developers left many feeling frustrated. In the end, MultiVersus struggled to keep players engaged, and its player numbers dropped significantly.
One last season before the end
If you want to jump in one last time, MultiVersus season 5 kicks off on 4 February at 9 AM PT / 12 PM ET / 5 PM GMT and will run until 30 May. The final season includes a 70-tier Battle Pass and introduces Aquaman and Lola Bunny as new playable characters. However, all content in season 5 will be earned through gameplay—no real money purchases are available anymore.
From today, in-game transactions have been disabled, but if you still have Gleamium or character tokens, you can spend them until the game shuts down. After 30 May, MultiVersus will be removed from storefronts and will no longer be playable online. However, the game won’t be completely gone—offline modes, including solo vs AI and local multiplayer, will still be available.
What’s next for the team?
Right now, there’s no word on what will happen to the development team. With MultiVersus shutting down, job losses seem likely, but no official statement has been made. This news also follows the departure of Warner Bros. Games CEO last week, after the disappointing performance of both Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League and MultiVersus.
