Mortal Shell II is officially on the way, and it’s aiming to push things way beyond what the original achieved. Playstack and Cold Symmetry have confirmed the sequel is set for release in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC (via Steam), and from the looks of it, they’re going bigger, deeper, and much darker this time.
The original Mortal Shell carved out a niche in the action RPG space with its punishing combat and clever Shell-swapping mechanic. Mortal Shell II picks that up and runs with it into blood-soaked ruins, frostbitten forests, and dungeons that probably want you dead.
A standalone sequel with brutal ambition
Right off the bat, Mortal Shell II is being built as a fully standalone experience. So even if you didn’t play the first game, you can still jump in. But for returning fans, there’s a lot to chew on here — a reworked combat system that’s faster and free of stamina restrictions, Shells that feel more distinct and upgradeable than ever, and an open world that’s tightly packed with secrets, dungeons, and danger at every turn.
Exploration is more freeform now. The game’s interconnected world has been designed to unfold naturally, pushing you to investigate ancient temples, frozen graves, bone-built citadels, and other twisted landmarks at your own pace. And with over 60 dungeons to discover (yes, 60), this world is not just about sightseeing, it’s survival through skill and smart decisions.

Shells, secrets, and combat without limits
The Shells are back, and they’re just as core to the experience as before. These are the dormant bodies of fallen warriors scattered across the realm, and each one holds its own style, strength, and abilities. Find one, awaken it, and possess it. Then dive deep into their memories and unlock their full potential.
This is where Mortal Shell II gets personal. The more you explore and experiment with different Shells, the more you tailor your own combat style. And since combat is now unrestricted by stamina, you’re free to get aggressive, switch tactics mid-fight, and keep the pressure on. Posture-breaking, precision strikes, and weapon mastery are key.
Weapons themselves can be upgraded and customised extensively. From fast blades to heavy instruments of pain, each weapon feels unique, and the game actively rewards you for mastering them.

Dethroning gods and cleansing a shattered world
You play as the Harbinger, a being bound to reclaim the stolen Ova of the blessed Undermether, and to do that, you’ll face off against some seriously intimidating enemies. These aren’t your average bosses; they’re towering, grotesque beings who serve as the false gods of this ravaged land.
The storytelling in Mortal Shell II is still cryptic and layered, unfolding as you explore and survive. Lore, memories, and twisted histories wait to be unearthed in forgotten corners of the map. And every victory feels earned.
