Morbid Metal, a fast-paced roguelike with slick action and real-time character swapping, will officially hit Early Access on Steam this 20 August. Developed by SCREEN JUICE and published by Ubisoft, this intense character action game blends stylish combat with punishing roguelite mechanics, and there’s already a playable demo available for anyone who wants to dive in early.

The free demo introduces players to one biome and gives a taste of the game’s signature Shapeshift Combat system. You’ll also get a chance to unlock Ekku, one of four playable characters, and test your skills with precise dodges, counterattacks, and combo chaining that flows from one character to another.

What Morbid Metal is all about

Set in a distant, desolate future, Morbid Metal drops you into semi-procedurally generated levels filled with hostile machines and decaying landscapes. As you fight through waves of enemies, you’ll shapeshift between up to four unique characters on the fly, each one bringing their abilities, attack patterns, and devastating special moves to the fight.

The action is built around speed, precision, and creativity. You’re encouraged to mix abilities from different characters to create deadly combos, clear enemies fast, and survive long enough to earn upgrades. But once you’re dead, that run is over, forcing you to start again with whatever you’ve unlocked permanently along the way.

Key features

  • Real-time shapeshifting between four unique characters
  • Fluid and stylish combat focused on chaining moves and perfect dodges
  • Semi-procedurally generated levels with distinct futuristic biomes
  • Stunning visual design powered by next-gen graphics
  • Deep character progression, including permanent unlocks
  • Run-based roguelite structure where every attempt matters
  • Lore-rich setting that reveals its secrets the deeper you go

Why the demo is worth playing now

The Steam demo offers a solid introduction to the mechanics and feel of Morbid Metal. With one biome to explore and Ekku available to unlock, it’s a focused but challenging experience. You’ll get to feel how shapeshifting mid-combat changes the pace, how each character plays differently, and how punishing but rewarding the game loop is.

It’s also a good chance to support the devs early. Feedback from demo players will help shape the game’s Early Access launch and potentially influence future updates. With Ubisoft involved in publishing, there’s solid backing behind this indie-style title.

If you’re a fan of games like Hades, Devil May Cry, or anything that combines flashy action with tough-as-nails progression, keep an eye on Morbid Metal. The Early Access launch on 20 August might just be the start of something special, and right now, the free demo is waiting for you on Steam.
