First announced back in May 2023, Marathon is a fresh take on the developer’s classic 1990s sci-fi series. But this time around, it’s stepping into the popular extraction shooter genre. While excitement around the game is growing, it hasn’t all been smooth sailing for Bungie. The project has seen its share of challenges, including studio layoffs and controversy involving the former game director.

Despite the hurdles, development has continued under new leadership. According to the latest update, players will take on the role of Runners — each with unique abilities that can be customised. During each session, users will collect gear and complete objectives, but they’ll need to extract safely to keep their loot. Fail to extract, and everything gathered during the run is lost.

The director also mentioned that players will be able to pick up different tools in the field, like weapons, equipment, and healing items. Some of these can change character stats or give new capabilities, adding a layer of strategy to every encounter.

There’s also an emphasis on a persistent, evolving world. The idea is that each player action could leave a mark on the game. Whether it’s fighting another crew for loot or discovering an artifact that unlocks a new part of the map, every run contributes to the larger narrative. Bungie wants Marathon to be more than just another shooter — it’s aiming for player-driven stories and long-term consequences that shape the experience for everyone.

Marathon will launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox with full cross-play support, ensuring that players on all platforms can dive into the action together.
