It’s only been a few months since Hyper Light Breaker landed in Early Access, and Heart Machine is already pushing out its first big shake-up. Set to launch on 29 April 2025, the Buried Below update isn’t just more content, it’s a full rework that touches nearly every part of the game.

First off, there’s a new Breaker on the scene: Rondo. Along with their arrival comes a new SyCom featuring two unique perks, plus a fresh crown called Maw to mix things up. You’ll also get access to two new melee weapons and brand-new cave environments to explore. These tighter, more atmospheric areas aim to break up the pace and add more variation to each run.

But the biggest change? The Hyper Light Breaker run structure is being reworked. From this update onwards, players will have just one life per run. Die, and everything in your inventory is wiped. The Overgrowth resets. According to Heart Machine, this shift allows them to better balance difficulty, making the game more approachable early on while adding a sharper edge for seasoned players. It’s the old “easy to pick up, hard to master” philosophy dialled in for Hyper Light Breaker.

There’s also a new rhythm to gameplay. The update introduces alternate ways to exit the Overgrowth, letting players strategise around escape instead of always pushing forward. SyComs now follow a more class-like system, customisation is being overhauled, and both vendors and the inventory system are being streamlined for a smoother experience overall.

For newcomers, this is probably the best time to jump in. Buried Below brings a new tutorial that eases you into the core mechanics, and it’s been designed to help not just first-time players but returning ones who want a quick refresher. No more wandering around lost in the Overgrowth, trying to piece things together—you’ll be taught the ropes and set loose with purpose.

This update doesn’t just expand Hyper Light Breaker, it redefines it.
