The upcoming roguelike action RPG Hell Clock will be released for PC via Steam on June 18, 2025, and will be priced at $19.99 / £16. Developed by Rogue Snail and published by Mad Mushroom, the game now also has a free demo available for anyone curious to try it early.

What is Hell Clock?

Set in an alternate version of 19th-century Brazil, Hell Clock blends fast-paced combat with dungeon-crawling and a strong historical backdrop. You take on the role of Pajeu, a warrior driven by the mission to save his mentor’s soul after a brutal political massacre. The game draws inspiration from the real-life War of Canudos, where thousands died resisting Brazil’s new Republic.

This isn’t just fiction—it’s a fight to rewrite history.

Each run throws you into a time-warped descent through deadly dungeons. The further you go, the more powerful your character becomes. The catch? Every second matters.

Gameplay highlights

  • Real-time roguelike combat – Every fight is a race against the clock. Decide whether to go deeper for better loot or retreat to fight another day.
  • Endless loot builds – Discover relics powered by the spirit of rebellion. Mix and match items and blessings to build your unstoppable loadout.
  • Unique combat powers – Use a range of flashy, deadly abilities like quick knife strikes, gunplay, or swinging Canudos’ massive bell like a weapon of justice.
  • Flexible difficulty – Choose between a challenging hardcore experience or a no-pressure relaxed mode that lets you focus on the story.
  • Three-act campaign and endgame – The full game includes a complete story and an upcoming Ascension Mode, with extra challenges, divine upgrades, and new ways to replay.

Unlike most roguelikes, Hell Clock doesn’t just drop you into a fantasy world—it ties its action directly to a moment in history. By focusing on Brazil’s resistance movement, the game offers a deeper narrative than the usual “dive and die” formula.

It also respects your time and skill level. If you want a slower experience, the Relaxed Mode removes time limits. But if you want full chaos, Hardcore and Hell Mode will push your reflexes to the edge.

Should you keep an eye on this?

If you enjoy games like Hades or Dead Cells, but want something grounded in real historical themes with an explosive combat system, Hell Clock deserves your attention. It offers the usual roguelike thrill with a powerful twist—and a setting you don’t often see in games.

This one’s for the players who love fast-paced action but also appreciate a story with purpose.
