Halo Studios is about to bring some big changes for Halo

Here we go! Back off our news of the Haloween announcement, it’s time for change at 343 Industries starting with a name change to Halo Studios. Some would suggest it’s been long overdue, with troubled development, layoffs, shifts in leadership and a whole host of reported problems. Of course, we can only speculate, remembering that this is an external view, and some information is just conjecture after fans get stroppy.

Halo fans (I consider myself a lifer, for what it’s worth), can be relentless in their passion for the franchise. Once ground-breaking, created by (the also floundering) Bungie, Halo has struggled to maintain its identity in recent years.

We’re looking at some change, though. Potentially a kick-start to the heart of one of the most beloved shooters of all time.

Halo Studios

Halo is entering a new era. 343 Industries, the studio behind the iconic franchise, has rebranded as Halo Studios, signalling a huge shift in its approach to development.

The rebranding coincides with a move away from their in-house Slipspace Engine to Unreal Engine 5 (like most other developers at this point!) for all future Halo projects. This change promises not only a visual leap forward but also a more efficient and collaborative development process.

Why the change?

The decision to switch to Unreal Engine stems from several factors:

  • Efficiency: Maintaining Slipspace Engine required significant resources, diverting manpower from game development itself. Unreal Engine allows the team to focus entirely on creating games.
  • Industry Standards: Unreal Engine is widely used in the gaming industry, making it easier for Halo Studios to attract and onboard new talent familiar with the technology.
  • Technological Advancements: Unreal Engine 5 offers cutting-edge features like Nanite and Lumen, enabling the creation of stunningly detailed and immersive environments that would have been difficult to achieve with Slipspace.
  • Faster Content Delivery: The move aims to address the increasing demand for faster content updates and new game releases. Unreal Engine facilitates quicker development cycles, enabling Halo Studios to better meet player expectations.

Project Foundry: A glimpse into the future

To demonstrate the potential of Unreal Engine 5 for the series, the studio developed Project Foundry. This initiative, inspired by the Forerunner Foundry from the well-established lore, is not a new game but a testament to the studio’s commitment to visual fidelity and the possibilities offered by Unreal Engine.

Project Foundry showcases three distinct biomes:

  • Pacific Northwest: A classic Halo environment reimagined with breathtaking detail, featuring lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and dynamic lighting.
  • Coldlands: A frozen landscape with snow-covered plateaus and reflective ice, demonstrating the engine’s ability to render realistic environments.
  • Blightlands: A new and terrifying vision of a world consumed by the Flood, pushing the boundaries of environmental storytelling.

Foundry highlights the meticulous attention to detail in character models, weapons, and animations, promising a visually stunning and authentic Halo experience.

While the switch to Unreal Engine offers significant visual enhancements, Halo Studios emphasises that the essence of Halo—its gameplay, physics, and overall feel—remains a top priority. They are committed to preserving the core elements that fans love while embracing new possibilities.

A new structure for a new era

While the switch to Unreal Engine offers significant visual enhancements, Halo Studios emphasises that the essence of Halo—its gameplay, physics, and overall feel—remains a top priority. They are committed to preserving the core elements that fans love while embracing new possibilities.

The studio has reorganised its internal structure to foster a more focused and collaborative development environment. This new approach empowers individual teams to make key decisions, ensuring that player feedback is central to the development process.

Looking ahead

While details about upcoming Halo games remain under wraps, Halo Studios confirms that multiple projects are in development. The studio is dedicated to delivering high-quality experiences that meet the expectations of its passionate fanbase. This new chapter for Halo promises a future filled with innovation, stunning visuals, and, most importantly, the same core gameplay that has captivated players for decades.
