Halo Infinite – Operation: Great Journey

We’re back with another Halo Infinite Operation, and this one is celebrating the 20th Anniversary of Halo 2!

I can’t believe it’s 20 years since un-wrapping Halo 2 and picking up dual SMGs for the first time.

Learning how to systematically destroy my brother in multiplayer, and following the next chapter in Master Chief’s saga.

Seeing Halo 2 in all the press kit and copy has been awesome, and some of the content Halo Studios is delivering, is going to hit you right in the nostalgia.

Operation: Great Journey is here now and it’s got a hefty amount of new content to take a look at. Maps, weapons, modes (third-person firefight!). They’re little and often, but I love these Halo Infinite Operations.

New weapons and maps

Prepare for new tactical possibilities with the addition of the Disruptor Shock Rifle and the M392 Bandit DMR. The Disruptor, a returning favourite, delivers a jolt of electrical damage perfect for close-quarters combat, while the Bandit DMR offers precision at long range. I’m a Battle Rifle guy, myself, but a new DMR is no bad thing! Now, Team SWAT beckons.

But that’s not all – two new maps are here, too. “Forest” is a classic-style arena map designed for tight, competitive 4v4 action, while “Argyle” provides a larger, more open environment for Big Team Battle mayhem.

Halo 2 inspired playlist

“Great Journey” introduces a dedicated playlist featuring maps and modes inspired by the legendary Halo 2. We get to re-live the joy of Lockout, Sanctuary, and Zanzibar reimagined for Halo Infinite, complete with weapon loadouts and gameplay settings that capture the essence of Halo 2’s iconic multiplayer.

Made by the community in Forge, these are some serious throw-backs, made with an eye for detail and some obvious love. You can absolutely tell they’re forge maps, but damn, they’re solid interpretations.

Third-person firefight

For the first time in Halo Infinite, get ready to tackle Firefight missions in third-person! This new perspective adds a fresh layer of intensity and tactical depth to the PvE experience. Coordinate with your squad, utilize cover effectively, and overcome waves of enemies with a whole new viewpoint.

I’m not 100% sure how to feel about this right now. Halo is a first-person shooter, but it’s always had third-person elements. Turrets, vehicles etc. So let’s see how it goes.

Earn rewards with the free 20-tier Operation Pass

Off the back of completing the free Haloween pass, now there’s a new one, too!

“Great Journey” brings a free 20-tier Operation Pass packed with cosmetic rewards. Progress through the tiers by completing challenges and earning XP to unlock new armour pieces, weapon skins, emblems, and more.

You can buy the premium version, but the additional gear isn’t really worth it, truth be told.

Forge improvements and sandbox updates

This update expands the already powerful Forge mode with new objects, scripting tools, and increased budget limits. Having extra room for creativity is never a bad thing, and looking at what people can already achieve, makes this pretty interesting.

Great Journey also includes various sandbox updates to improve weapon balance, vehicle handling, and overall gameplay. Additionally, The Exchange has been refreshed with new items and customization options, giving you even more ways to personalize your Spartan.

Let’s go!

Halo Studios are still putting plenty of love into Halo Infinite, and damn, I’m here for it. There’s a lot to play at the moment, particularly when considering Game of the Year etc. But this game manages to stay relevant and still on top of the pile most days for a quick match or two.

Will you be joining in? See you there!
