11 bit studios is taking us back to New London. Frostpunk 1886, just announced for PC, is a standalone return to the brutal, decision-heavy survival city-builder that started it all—rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5 and set to launch in 2027.

This isn’t just a remaster. It’s a reimagining.

Built from the ground up, Frostpunk 1886 sheds the old Liquid Engine (used in Frostpunk and This War of Mine) in favour of a more powerful, flexible base. That switch unlocks long-awaited features—mod support, richer systems, and an engine that can grow with future expansions. According to the devs, this version of Frostpunk is a living platform.

Set during the year the Great Storm hit New London, the game marks a pivotal moment in the series’ timeline. But what’s new isn’t just the setting. Alongside expanded laws and mechanics, Frostpunk 1886 adds a whole new Purpose path, giving even the most experienced survivors a reason to return. It’s all about choice, control, and surviving the cold again.

While Frostpunk 2 is still receiving updates, DLC, and a console release, Frostpunk 1886 runs on a parallel track. Think of it as the studio doubling down. One future-forward. One back to the roots.

Development started in early 2025, and the studio says more details are coming soon. For now, consider the frostbitten clock ticking once more.
