The Elder Scrolls Online is preparing for one of its most significant shifts since launch, with a paid battle pass system arriving more than 12 years into the game’s lifespan, and reactions are already mixed.
ZeniMax Online Studios has announced that “Tamriel Tomes” will go live on 2 April 2026, kicking off with the Tome of Dawn and Dusk. The move follows internal admissions that ESO’s update cycle had grown too predictable, pushing the studio to rethink how rewards, cosmetics, and progression are delivered.
The structure is familiar. Tamriel Tomes will feature both free and premium tracks, with progression tied to regular gameplay, seasonal challenges, and limited-time activities. ZeniMax is keen to reassure players that the paid tier won’t impact balance, instead focusing on cosmetic-heavy rewards.

What changes for long-term Elder Scrolls Online players
The introduction of Tamriel Tomes also marks the removal of Endeavours and Daily Login Rewards during “Season Zero”. Most of those incentives are being absorbed into the new system, alongside a fresh currency called Gold Coast Bazaar Trade Bars, used in a dedicated store for Tome-related items.
Elder Scrolls Online Plus subscribers, however, stand to gain the most. Members earn Tome Points faster and receive Premium Tome Tokens as part of their subscription, meaning consistent subscribers can unlock premium Tomes without direct payment.

For a game that launched in 2014, this is a bold recalibration. Whether it refreshes ESO’s long-term appeal or risks alienating its veteran base is something only time and player sentiment will decide.
