DOOM: The Dark Ages DLC sounds less like an add-on and more like DOOM 2

When a director says his own expansion feels like a sequel, you pay attention.

According to Hugo Martin from id Software, the DOOM: The Dark Ages DLC is not some short side story. He described it as “freaking huge” and “basically a sequel”. That’s a bold claim for campaign DLC.

DOOM: The Dark Ages DLC feels like a sequel

The big twist is structure. The DOOM: The Dark Ages DLC leans into a heavy backtracking loop, almost Metroidvania-style. You push through a main path, unlock new tools, then return to earlier areas to open secrets and endgame content. There’s also a central hub packed with hidden paths and optional challenges.

Martin says mastering certain tools takes serious effort, but once you do, combat changes in a big way. High skill ceiling. Bigger rewards. That sounds very on-brand for modern DOOM.

Story is getting more attention too, but not through long cutscenes. The focus is on environmental storytelling. You feel it while playing instead of watching it.

One interesting detail: quick swap is coming, but players will have to earn it.

Doom: The Dark Ages DLC premium edition, killing a monster

There’s no release window yet for the DOOM: The Dark Ages DLC. If this really lands like a sequel, it could extend the game’s life far longer than expected.
