90kg stone projectiles and Chinese thunder crash bombs won’t be the only thing you’re launching over 300 meters on January 26th

Firefly Studios has released two developer diaries for Stronghold: Warlords, the latest historical RTS in their legendary ‘castle sim’ series. From siege weapons like the thunder crash bombs and mortar to all-new warlord AI allowing players to recruit and command warlords across the map, Stronghold: Warlords will break new ground for the series:

“Our trebuchets can be loaded up with either pigs or water buffalo” said Nick Tannahill, Marketing Director at Firefly Studios. “This may sound silly, but spreading disease throughout an enemy castle can mean certain doom for soldiers and peasants alike! Just remember it takes longer to load up a water buffalo, so think of the pig as your rapid fire option”.

Stronghold: Warlords will be the first game in the strategy series to introduce gunpowder siege weapons. Coming in the form of thunder crash bombs, the fearsome mortar, hwacha fire arrow cart and more, each can be used in different ways to cripple and eventually conquer rival players. Spread fire across enemy farmlands by catapulting bombs over their walls, blow apart defences with massive cannonballs or breach their castle walls with ancient rocket launchers. Castle defences also benefit from the addition of gunpowder with mounted hwacha able to mow down lightly armoured enemy infantry before they can approach your walls.

In the Warlords Deep Dive video, series Lead Designer and Co-Founder Simon Bradbury also provides a rundown of the game’s titular warlords system. Walking players through the finer details of Stronghold: Warlords‘ new grand strategy gameplay elements, the interview is accompanied by new multiplayer footage and a first look at the latest version of the warlords system itself.

Discussing the history of Stronghold‘s estates and their evolution into the current warlords system, Simon goes in depth for the first time about what this new addition means for our ‘castle sim’ series. Demonstrating how this feature will work in multiplayer and single-player modes, the dev diary covers how players will battle it out militarily and politically, gaining ‘influence’ over warlords across the map. With the ability to force a warlord to bend the knee by military might or use diplomacy points to gain favour with them over other players, it is up to the player to decide how and when to conquer each warlord.

Scheduled for release on January 26th 2021 via Steam, players can find out more about Stronghold: Warlords by visiting the game’s official website: www.StrongholdWarlords.com
