Forty years on, Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary is still finding ways to drop more rocks on your head, and we mean that as a compliment.
Munich-based publisher BBG Entertainment has shipped a sizeable new update for Boulder Dash 40th Anniversary, expanding the anniversary package with extra content, more classic presentation options, and a batch of platform-focused improvements. It’s a fitting celebration for one of gaming’s most enduring puzzle-action names, originally created by Peter Liepa and Chris Gray back in 1984.
New worlds and a bigger cave count
The headline additions are aimed squarely at anyone who plays Boulder Dash and immediately thinks, “Right, show me the nastiest caves you’ve got.”
This update adds:
- Three new Modern Worlds, including the legendary fan-made Firefox levels
- A new Classic World built from Boulder Dash Construction Set levels
- A total of 320 playable caves across the package
If you’re chasing the “just one more level” loop, that 320-cave total is the kind of number that quietly steals your weekend.
More retro flavour on demand
For the proper nostalgia hit, classic visuals have been expanded too, with the original ZX Spectrum and Apple II look now selectable (including classic graphics and sound, per the update notes).
That sits alongside the broader “pick your vibe” approach the anniversary edition already leans into, with modern HD visuals also available.
Platform and quality-of-life upgrades
On the technical side, the update brings:
- Performance fixes on Nintendo Switch
- UI, import, score, and workshop improvements
- Enhanced audio, including new effects for the Magic Wall in Classic Worlds
- Additional languages (Japanese and Russian)
PC players on Steam will also notice continued Steam Deck love. The community notes call out improved Steam Deck support, and the store listing shows the game as Deck Verified.
