Borderlands 4 is officially out on PC, and it’s already rewriting the franchise’s history. Within just an hour of launch, the game hit a massive 201,273 concurrent players on Steam, making it the biggest Borderlands release on the platform ever.
Borderlands 4 is bigger than its predecessors
For comparison, Borderlands 2, long regarded as the series’ golden child, peaked at 124,678 players. Borderlands 3? It topped out at 93,820. That means Borderlands 4 didn’t just beat its predecessors – it left them in the dust.

Right now, PC players can dive in through Steam or the Epic Games Store. Console fans will need to wait a little longer, as launch times roll out across regions. And remember, Steam only tells half the story. We don’t get the same data for consoles, which means the true player count is almost certainly even higher.
The strong debut is a huge win for Gearbox, especially after Borderlands 3 left many players underwhelmed. Borderlands 4 is stepping up in a big way, and if these numbers are anything to go by, the loot-shooter king is back on its throne.
