Ashes of Creation, the ambitious MMORPG that launched in early access on Steam, is facing a major collapse. Over the weekend, reports emerged that the entire team at Intrepid Studios has been laid off. Many employees reportedly resigned following the exit of founder and creative director Steven Sharif.
Sharif explained on the game’s Discord that he stepped down after losing control of the company. He said the Board’s decisions conflicted with his ethics, leaving him no choice but to resign. Following his departure, senior staff left, and the Board issued mass layoffs under WARN notices.
Ashes of Creation in crisis: layoffs and unpaid staff
Employees under notice are expected to miss their February 1 payroll due to the company’s financial issues. Internal communications described the layoffs as a “permanent plant closing,” signalling the end of operations.
Players and backers reacted strongly on Steam and social media, with some calling the situation a “pump and dump scam.” With around 319,000 copies sold at $49.99 each, roughly $14 million is now tied up in a game that could vanish entirely. Refunds and legal action may follow.

Fans also dug up company filings showing Sharif as the sole Board member and CEO, alongside CFO John Moore. This has complicated the narrative, as backers remember Kickstarter promises of full refunds if the game didn’t launch on Steam.
At the time of writing, Ashes of Creation is still available to buy on Steam for £41.99 ($49.99), but its future is now highly uncertain.
