Undead Labs is finally letting players in. The developer has announced that sign-ups for the State of Decay 3 alpha playtest are now open, with sessions scheduled to begin next month.
A new video on the official State of Decay YouTube channel saw franchise co-creator Brant Fitzgerald step up to share the news. He acknowledged that much of the team has spent the past few years supporting State of Decay 2, but confirmed a dedicated group has been quietly building out the third entry throughout that period.

Fitzgerald also revealed that the team has been combing through player feedback across Discord, gameplay clips, and livestreams all in a bid to understand what worked and what didn’t in State of Decay 2.

Fitzgerald kept things deliberately vague to avoid spoilers, but did confirm a few details about what the alpha will include:
- 4-player co-op
- New base building and resource management mechanics
- A heavy emphasis on combat
It’s worth noting this follows comments made by Xbox Game Studios head in January 2026, who said State of Decay 3 had been “coming on really well.”

Interested players can head to the official sign-up page to register for a spot in the playtest.
