State of Decay 3 is still moving forward, and Xbox leadership sounds quietly pleased with how things are shaping up.
It was first revealed in July 2020, and the zombie sequel has stayed mostly out of the spotlight. The last real sign of life came in 2024, when a trailer arrived with a few short gameplay moments. Since then, updates have been rare, leaving fans wondering how development was going.
State of Decay 3 – Official Announce Trailer
That silence has now been broken, at least a little.
After the Xbox Developer Direct, Xbox Games Studio head Craig Duncan spoke with GamesRadar+ about the project. While he stopped short of teasing new footage or announcements, he did confirm that he has spent real hands-on time with the game.

Duncan explained that he has visited Undead Labs multiple times over the past six to eight months. During those visits, he played State of Decay 3 alongside the development team and checked in on progress directly.
His takeaway was positive. According to Duncan, the game is “coming on really well.”
That comment carries weight, especially given how long the project has been in development. It suggests the game is not only active but steadily improving behind the scenes.
Right now, Xbox’s public focus is on near-term releases, including the Fable reboot and its wider plans for 2026. Still, Duncan’s comments make one thing clear.

State of Decay 3 is alive, progressing, and not as far off as some might fear.
