Old Divinity titles are now history, as Larian Studios‘ devs are saying that players don’t need to play older titles for the upcoming Divinity game.
Larian Studios has resurfaced after they debuted their upcoming title at the Game Awards, and we have been hearing from them from time to time about the game.
Divinity’s past is now just background lore
Swen Vincke, founder of the studio, explained the topic during an interview with GamesRadar+ regarding whether players should play older titles or not. He first elaborated that the upcoming title will reference events from games like Ego Draconis or The Dragon Knight Saga. However, they will only serve the purpose of history.

He also added that fans of Baldur’s Gate 3’s cinematic style should not try out older games unless they want to know the lore. But if they have some spare time, they should try out Original Sin II, as it served as a blueprint for Baldur’s Gate 3 regarding its tactical combat and freedom.
He concluded that those who want to have a deep understanding of the world should only go back to the beginning, as those titles are now old and a bit outdated.

The new Divinity game is following the same path as other studio titles by entering Early Access first to get player feedback to shape the game. While some fans do hope that the old real-time action might return, this title will stick to the turn-based and co-op gameplay that won them Game of the Year.
