KOEI Tecmo has confirmed a full remake of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, set to launch on PC in early 2026. A debut trailer is already out, setting the stage for the return of one of horror’s most celebrated titles.
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly announcement trailer
The game retells the chilling story of twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura. A childhood memory leads them to a stream, but when Mayu follows a strange red butterfly, she’s drawn into a cursed village that exists outside time. Shadows, spirits, and a sinister ritual await as night refuses to end.

Players step into Mio’s role, armed only with the Camera Obscura – a supernatural device that captures and defeats ghosts. But each encounter drags her deeper into the village’s past and the “forbidden ritual” no one should witness.
The remake promises a full overhaul with modern visuals, enhanced sound, and refined controls. The Camera Obscura has been reworked too, giving exploration and battles sharper tension than ever before.
Originally released in 2003, Crimson Butterfly is widely considered the peak of the Fatal Frame series. This remake looks to deliver its haunting story to a new generation – and test whether players can survive the village’s secrets once again.
