Battlefield 6 won’t have ray tracing, and that’s not by accident. Ripple Effect Studios made the call early on to drop the feature, focusing instead on making sure the game runs smoothly for everyone.
Studio technical director Christian Buhl explained that the team wanted to spend all their effort on performance and optimisation. No shiny reflections, no fancy light tricks – just a stable experience that works out of the box. For a competitive shooter, that makes sense. Frames over flair.

Frames over flair in Battlefield 6
It’s a notable shift when you think about it. Battlefield V helped debut ray tracing back in 2018, and Battlefield 2042 brought in ray-traced ambient occlusion. But in Battlefield 6, the priority is clear: speed and consistency.
Players seem to be on board as the beta turned out to be the biggest in franchise history, showing that smooth gameplay is winning out. PC users aren’t left out of upgrades either, with support for NVIDIA DLSS, AMD FSR 3, and Intel XeSS to squeeze out even more frames.
Battlefield 6 launches October 10 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox. Performance first – ray tracing can wait.
