Wargaming, the team behind games like World of Tanks and World of Warships, is trying something new with Steel Hunters. This mech-themed hero shooter was revealed at The Game Awards 2024 by Geoff Keighley, and it’s already got players talking.

STEEL HUNTERS - GAMEPLAY REVEAL

A bold new step for Wargaming

Wargaming’s CEO, Victor Kislyi, called this a huge moment for the company:

“With Steel Hunters, we’re stepping into new territory. We want to create one of the most exciting mech experiences ever made.”

The game has been in development for over three years, with teams from Guildford, Prague, and other studios around the world pouring their efforts into it. Product Director Mike McDonald said:

“This game is a mix of everything we love about shooters, but with a fresh twist. We can’t wait for players to see what we’ve built.”

What’s Steel Hunters about?

Set in a ruined version of Earth, Steel Hunters is all about battling over a rare alien resource called Starfall. Players take control of massive mechanical Hunters built by rival factions to secure this precious material.

The action takes place in a player-versus-player-versus-environment (PvPvE) arena. You’ll fight other players and AI enemies, levelling up and gathering gear during the match. Everything leads to a final showdown where the goal is to extract safely with your loot.

What makes Steel Hunters different?

The game combines elements from hero shooters, Battle Royale, and Extraction genres. Here’s what you can expect:

There’s also plenty of customisation. Players can tweak their Hunters with new gear and show off their style with cosmetic items.

Launch details

A closed playtest is running now on PC until 22nd December, so you can sign up to try it early. You can also add the game to your wishlist on Steam. The full release is planned for next year, and Wargaming says consoles might follow.

If you’re into mechs, team-based combat, or just love a good mix of action and strategy, Steel Hunters is shaping up to be a game worth watching.
