Bungie’s extraction shooter Marathon is still grinding through closed tests, and the latest round has dropped some major details. Reports say up to 900 players have been feeding back, giving Bungie a clearer picture of what’s working – and what’s not.
According to The Game Post, proximity chat is in. A core feature extraction fans expect, made famous by Escape from Tarkov. It’s a small but vital step to keep the tension high.

Marathon combat gets sharper, and progression expands
Combat tweaks are also on the table. Time-to-kill is now quicker than earlier builds, making fights feel sharper and more punishing. Healing and damage systems have been rebalanced too, with overpowered items toned down. Even death animations are changing – no more vanishing bodies; player models now drop more realistically.
There’s also new progression. A Codex challenge menu, cosmetic titles for profiles, and even a shooting range for weapon testing are all being trialled. These additions suggest that Bungie is working to enhance long-term engagement.
But doubts remain. Accusations of art plagiarism still linger, and many question whether Marathon can stand out in a genre dominated by Tarkov, DMZ, and a wave of new contenders – Bungie’s got work to do if it wants this comeback to stick.
