8BitDo has introduced a new version of its Retro R8 gaming mouse. The latest model is inspired by the classic Commodore 64 computer and continues the company’s retro-themed design style. While the look is different, the core hardware inside the mouse remains the same as previous Retro R8 models.
The Retro R8 C64 Edition uses a PAW 3395 optical sensor that supports six DPI levels ranging from 50 to 26,000 DPI. This allows users to choose very slow or very fast cursor movement depending on their needs. The mouse also supports high polling rates, reaching up to 8,000 Hz when used with a wired connection and up to 4,000 Hz when using the 2.4 GHz wireless mode. When connected through Bluetooth, the polling rate is limited to 125 Hz.
The design of the mouse is symmetrical, which means it can be used comfortably by both left-handed and right-handed users. It also includes four programmable side buttons. These buttons can be customised through the 8BitDo Ultimate Software, allowing users to set different commands or shortcuts.
8BitDo has not confirmed which switches are used in this version of the mouse. Another model in the lineup, the NES-inspired N Edition, uses Kailh Sword GM X micro switches, but the company has not said if the same switches are included in the C64 Edition.
One useful feature included with the mouse is its charging dock. The dock not only charges the mouse but also works as a wireless signal extender. This can help improve the stability of the wireless connection during use.
The battery life is also quite strong. The mouse can last up to 100 hours when connected through Bluetooth. When using the 2.4 GHz wireless mode, the battery life ranges between 26 and 105 hours depending on the selected polling rate. A full recharge takes about 2.5 hours.
Users can connect the mouse in three different ways: Bluetooth LE 5.3, 2.4 GHz wireless, or wired USB. This makes it flexible for different setups, whether for gaming or everyday work.
