Moonless Formless, the solo developer behind Withering Rooms, is back with another eerie adventure—Withering Realms, a horror action RPG set to launch in Early Access for PC via Steam in Q4 2025. A full release across consoles and PC will follow later.
Set in 1926, a decade after a mysterious “occult event” rewrote reality and ended the Great War, Withering Realms introduces players to a world where the dead walk, spirits roam, and some individuals wield unnatural powers.
You play as Clover, a 9-year-old girl who wakes up alone in a decaying mansion near the heart of the catastrophe—only to realise she’s a ghost. Her sole companion? A bizarre yet powerful doll, stitched together from wood, metal, and human remains. Together, they must navigate the haunted town of Penwyll and its sprawling graveyards in search of a way to restore Clover to life.
Withering Realms’ key features
- Explore a decayed world – Venture through tombs, caves, and rotting estates, hunting for treasures, magical artefacts, and upgrade materials.
- Build an arsenal – Forge weapons and machines to slot into the doll’s missing right arm, from a Pivoting Greatsword to a Machinegun or even a Flamethrower.
- Shape the world – Expand the map by defeating massive perimeter guardians that block your path.
- Make powerful allies – Team up with figures like Althea, a fearless investigator who will stop at nothing to uncover Penwyll’s dark secrets—interrogation, lockpicking, and forgery included.
- Fear the night – Return to familiar locations after dark, where new terrors and hidden mysteries await.
What to expect from Early Access
The Early Access launch in Q4 2025 will include a fully playable game from start to finish, but expect ongoing tweaks, additional side quests, and a New Game+ mode leading up to the full release. The game’s systems and balance will also evolve based on player feedback.
Although Withering Realms shares its universe with Withering Rooms, it’s an entirely standalone experience. You won’t need prior knowledge of the first game to dive into this one. The game blends horror, action RPG mechanics, and puzzle-solving, with a primary 3/4 top-down perspective.
And no, this isn’t a roguelike—though some dungeons and areas are procedurally generated, death doesn’t wipe your progress.
Console release confirmed, but details are under wraps
