Valve ends production of Steam Deck 256GB LCD, leaving only OLED models

Valve has made a quiet but significant change in the handheld gaming world, ending production of its most budget-friendly Steam Deck: the 256GB LCD ‘OG’ model. Sharp-eyed gamers spotted a subtle note on the Steam Deck store page confirming that the remaining stock represents the final units available.

At the time, the 256GB LCD model could still be added to the basket, but how many are actually left in Valve’s inventory is anyone’s guess.

Only OLED Steam Deck from here

From now on, gamers looking to get their hands on a Steam Deck will need to go for the OLED version. The entry-level 512GB OLED model is priced at $549, quite a jump from the 256GB LCD’s $399. But the extra cost comes with perks: a larger, higher-quality screen, better networking, a bigger battery, and even a longer charging cable.

It’s not shocking that Valve is discontinuing the LCD model, but many expected a clearance deal, especially with the Steam Winter Sale and the festive season approaching. Last year, Valve offered a 15% discount on the 64GB LCD Deck before phasing it out entirely, setting a precedent that some fans hoped would repeat.

Steam’s store page now makes it clear:

“We are no longer producing the Steam Deck LCD 256GB model. Once sold out, it will no longer be available.”

Looking ahead, Valve seems focused on newer hardware, including the recently teased Steam Machine, a hybrid designed to combine the best of a gaming PC and a traditional home console. While it’s scheduled for a 2026 release, pricing details are still under wraps.

For anyone eyeing the LCD Steam Deck, the clock is ticking. Valve is moving forward, leaving the old model behind in favour of bigger screens and brighter futures.
