When Ubisoft announced a free roguelike mode (Forgotten Saga) being added to Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, I was intrigued, to say the least! So much so that I got over my disdain for where the series was going after Odyssey (Origins was the peak of the whole series, fight me) killed my appetite for Assassin’s Creed.
So I got Valhalla in a sale and thought to myself that I’ll get started and dive into the roguelike mode once it comes out. Thinking it was perhaps tacked-on.
Forgotten Saga was on my list of things to do a “Quick Look” on over at ninjarefinery.com and I was genuinely excited to dive in.
It turns out, that “Quick look” required about 13 hours of my time before I could actually even start Forgotten Saga. Now, I see how I could have gotten there quicker, so I wanted to share my knowledge to help anyone else interested in seeing what Forgotten Saga has to offer.
Get started
I think it’s fair to say that Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla has been out long enough that Ubisoft had every right to assume people had gotten far enough into the game to start Forgotten Saga without much issue. I can’t really blame them for that.
If you’re a new player to the game like I was, though. You’ve got some work to do.
I’ll break it down as plainly as I can, but Valhalla does like to make you grind out your adventuring…..
- Step one: Get to England in the main story. This is non-negotiable. You must leave your home and head to England. Starting your settlement in Ravensthorpe. This is the most critical part of the whole process. If you’re not here, you can’t start Forgotten Saga.
- Step two: Raid, raid and raid. This is where I lost time. I was playing the story, doing some exploring and touching some raids here and there. Get as many raids done as you can, to get the supplies to build-out Ravensthorpe. It’s important because unless your settlement is level 3, you can’t start Forgotten Saga. Get those materials and build out some of those places.
- Step three: Story time. I hit level 3 after clearing the Ledecestrescire part of the main storyline. Whether or not this is crucial, I’m not 100% sure, but if the raids that you can do are done, those tough ones aren’t doable. This is your way.
- Step four: Start the “A wise friend” quest. Hit level 3 and do this quest. Easy.
- Step five: More materials are required to upgrade the Seer’s hut. Raid if you can, or do more story stuff. Hopefully, you raided in a big way earlier, so you have enough materials already.
- Step six: Fetch the thistles and drink the potion. Head to Asgard! It’s weird because it isn’t part of the Forgotten Saga really, but you need to do this before you can finally start.
- Step seven: The Forgotten Saga is now available! you should get a notification, and now you can go find Everold to start things off. A few more cutscenes and you’re in.

That’s it, you’re able to play and replay the Forgotten Saga that’s been added to Valhalla since August 2nd 2022. It was a pain to get there if I’m honest, and it’s burned me out because I’ve been pushing blindly forwards, trying to get things done.
I truly hope this helps someone else that’s just starting and aiming to start the new mode above playing the base game. I’ll be doing my “Quick Look” but probably not for a little while now. I’ve spent more time on it than anticipated and dropped a few other games I’d hoped to play over the past week or so.
Having done one quick run to go through any tutorial bits, I have an idea of what’s to come, and it seems decent enough. Worth a grind to just unlock it? We’ll see! But the average Valhalla player has likely already done this work anyway, so it’s not likely to be a major issue for many.
